Global mining giant calls on Surrey agency for underground ‘shoot’
Needing a safe pair of hands to film a recent H&S video, Anglo American, the London based global mining company, recently called upon Surrey agency Flipside to go underground at its Union platinum mine in South Africa.
The video documents the safety success of Anglo’s ‘Zero Harm’ campaign in an environment where risk is ever-present. The team at Union mine has worked hard to turn around attitudes to safety, and the video was made to show the world how seriously big mining corporations approach the challenges of protecting their people, and the commitment of the Anglo workforce to embracing and implementing a Zero Harm culture.
The team was led by Flipside director Neil Christie, an award-winning film-maker, who took a crew down the mine’s Spud Shaft to record the practical approach to H&S at depth. The production was shot on the latest Sony High Definition cameras, which work particularly well in low light.
Much of the filming took place some distance below ground, but with the cutting face often kilometres from the shaft the crew were at times a 45 minute drive from the surface. The shoot also included a celebration of the exemplary 17 year safety record at Kriel Colliery, one of Anglo’s open-cast coal mines and among the safest in the business.
Christie notes that the biggest challenge however was the time frame:
‘Shooting underground is always technically challenging, but from leaving the UK to getting the finished cut to the screening we had only 14 days in total – there was no margin for error.’
‘The film was ‘do-able’ in the time frame simply because Flipside has installed its own digital editing suite as part of its Creative Village environment’, Christie added. ‘The ‘rushes’ were literally rushed to the agency the moment the crew landed back from South Africa, digitised and edited on the spot!’
The film, one of a number of projects that Flipside has completed for Anglo, was premiered to accompany Anglo CEO Cynthia Carroll’s presentation to staff on the occasion of the annual results announcement. It received a standing ovation.
